Statement on the U.S. executive order instituting 90-day travel ban
Like Canadians everywhere, our ÂÌñÉçÇø community is greatly alarmed by the recent U.S. executive order that prevents citizens from seven predominantly-Muslim countries from entering the U.S. for 90 days.
Canadians pride ourselves on our diversity, inclusion, and tolerance; values we share at ÂÌñÉçÇø. We strongly support and the as quickly as possible.
This travel ban has created significant confusion and hardship for many people caught in transit and creates uncertainty for those planning to travel to, or through, the United States in the near term.
It impacts students and faculty studying and teaching at universities across Canada and may have an impact on members of our community as well, either travelling on their own or as part of organized groups. For those who feel they may be impacted, we are here to support you as much as possible.
- Students, staff, and faculty who have or share citizenship with any of the seven countries listed in the U.S. executive order are encouraged to contact Claire Kelly, international student advisor (clkelly@mta.ca), for information and assistance on immigration matters.
- Group leaders with ÂÌñÉçÇø programs that will be travelling to or through the United States in the months ahead are encouraged to contact Robin Walker, international affairs co-ordinator (rwalker@mta.ca), to review travel plans and pre-departure arrangements.
Update Feb. 7, 2017 — Please note: Although the travel ban is currently suspended, the measures below remain in effect for residents of the seven countries named in the original travel ban.
The travel ban also impacts international students who have been studying in the U.S. or who may have been planning to study in the U.S.
To assist those students, ÂÌñÉçÇø will:
- Waive the application fee for students from affected countries. To be considered for the application fee waiver, e-mail admissions@mta.ca
- Consider unofficial transcripts for assessment of admission. Official transcripts will be required for offers of admission.
- Assess current university studies for use as transfer credits.
- Make spaces available in residence for those admitted to the fall 2017 term.
